Gaza City Under Attack: Ceasefire Ends in Violence
Gaza City, March 18, 2025 – In the early hours of Tuesday, Israeli forces launched airstrikes across the Gaza Strip, causing over 400 deaths, including many women and children, and hundreds more injured, ending a fragile two-month ceasefire.
Israel’s Justification for Renewed Military Action
A spokesman for the Israeli government said that their renewed military actions – together with a blockade on aid convoys – was to put pressure on Hamas into releasing all the remaining October 7th hostages still held in Gaza. Hamas, in response, says that Israel unilaterally overturned the January ceasefire agreement.
Deepening Humanitarian Crisis
The latest blockade has exacerbated the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, with United Nations officials warning of an escalating hunger and health crisis if food and medical supplies are not quickly restored.
UN Calls for Restraint and Peace
Shocked by the number of airstrike casualties today in Gaza, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for the ceasefire to be respected, the restoration of unimpeded humanitarian assistance, and the unconditional release of the remaining hostages.
